In Kolhapur town of Maharashtra, which faces acute water shortage, four newspaper delivery men have taken upon themselves to conserve water.
The men– Kiran Vangutte, Sunil Samdolikar, Shashikant Jadhav and Sunil Chavan– close the water taps as they cycle around the town delivering the papers.
In some areas of the town, government water supply begins at 2 a.m., many residents keep the tap on so that they know when the supply is turned on.
But, many a times they also don’t hear their taps running and water goes waste.
Vangutte daily starts working at 2 am. He stops at several place and closes the taps. He says:
“There is an acute water shortage in and around the city. People leave the tap running while sleeping so thousands of liters of water go water.”
Sometimes even after repeated request, residents don’t comply.
Narrating one such incident, Vangutte said, “One resident was keeping his tap open even after requests. So we offered to pay the bill of plumber to him. He realized his mistake and from next day started closing the tap.”
