By adhering to the norms of green building in its residential colonies, Delhi Metro has become the first and the only “green” Metro system in the world. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has awarded the Delhi Metro with a platinum rating for abiding by green building norms in its 10 residential colonies.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) added capacity to generate additional power of 2.6 megawatt (MW) across its network in the city and hence, has generated as much as 20 MW of power through solar panels so far in 2017.

Earlier, the DMRC had received green certificates for its stations, depots and sub-stations of Phase-3.

During the event, Mangu Singh, the managing director of DMRC, laid stress on the need for adopting “green” methods in transport systems.

The Economic Times quotes Mangu Singh saying,

Energy consumption has increased by 700 per cent in the last four decades in the country and this will increase further three times by 2030. One of the major users of energy is the transport sector, that also, urban transport. Therefore, it is very relevant to focus on Metro systems and talk of green Metro.

IGBC also appreciated the steps taken by Delhi Metro in order to reduce carbon-footprint at its locations. Prem C. Jain, chairman IGBC, said that the Delhi Metro is the first one to become a green metro. He further said that the platinum rating earned by DMRC is very hard earned and a lot of toil has gone into the process.

At the event, there was also a mention of ‘Swachh Chetna – An Eco Club’, which is a combined initiative of the DMRC and Shri Ram School, Gurugram, which encourages children to participate in environment friendly activities and projects.
