Najeeb Jung, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, has resigned one-and-a-half years before his tenure ends in 2018. He has sent his resignation to the Centre and said he wants to return to his “first love, academics”.
The reason behind his surprise decision was not immediately known.
Jung thanked the people of Delhi for all their support and affection, especially during the one year’s President Rule in Delhi, when he got support to run the administration in Delhi smoothly and effortlessly. He also thanked Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal for his association in the last two years.
Jung’s two years in office were dogged by his constant battle with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. The AAP had called Jung an agent of the BJP, which rules at the Centre.
Earlier this year, in a severe setback to the AAP, the Delhi High Court recognised the Lt Governor as the administrative head of the Delhi government.
Soon after Jung resigned from his post, the rumor mill has started churning that Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi might take the place of Jung.
Bedi had unsuccessfully led the BJP’s campaign in Delhi assembly poll in February last year, when the party was reduced to just three seats in the assembly. Bedi too had suffered a humiliating defeat.
Twitteratis are reacting too:
My choice for new Delhi LG is Kiran Bedi mam. It will be too much fun.

Why not ‘Demolition Man’ Alphons Kannanthanam IAS, former Commissioner of DDA, as the successor of Najeeb Jung as Delhi’s next LG?
