Indian cricketer and Delhi’s local boy Gautam Gambhir on April 25 decided to step down as the captain of Delhi Daredevils after the team suffered five losses under him this IPL season.

Gambhir, who in the past has led the Kolkata Knight Riders team to IPL glory twice, decided to step down from his post after the team remained rooted to the bottom of the table and lost five of the six games they have played so far.

The DD team has now decided to hand the reins to twenty-three-year-old Shreyas Iyer who in the past 6 matches has scored 151 runs at a strike rate of 137.27.

While Iyer has scored two half-centuries in the six matches he has played, Gambhir’s form has been a major cause for worry for the team as he has only scored in single digits after hitting a half-century in the first game.

Gambhir was bought by the DD team in January this year with the franchise hoping to break their IPL trophy drought under his experienced hands.

Unfortunately, Gambhir was not able to live up the expectation and finally decided to step down as captain taking full responsibility for the team’s bad form.

“I take full responsibility for the position we are in. And looking at the position, I have decided to step down as captain. Iyer will take over. I still feel we have the team to turn things around this IPL. (This is )Absolutely my decision. I was the one who initiated the meeting (with the team owners). I thought that I haven’t contributed enough and at the same time, the performance of the team… I had to take the responsibility being the leader of the ship. So I feel that it was the right time.”
He then went on to add that the team is still very much in this competition and that he faced no pressure from the franchise who have been “absolutely supportive.”

What are your thought on Gambhir stepping down and Iyer taking charge of the team? Do you think its the right decision? Please let us know in the comments section below.
