One of the five adult men convicted in the December 16, 2012 Delhi gangrape case Vinay Sharma reportedly tried to commit suicide on Wednesday night inside Tihar Jail.
Reports say that he first took pills and then tried to hang himself.
The convict has been admitted to a hospital for treatment but his condition is not known.
Sharma, along with three other convicts – Mukesh, Pawan and Akshay Kumar Singh, had approached the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s 2014 verdict which had upheld the death sentence awarded by a trial court.
In 2013, Vinay had demanded extra security claiming that he was beaten up by other inmates at the Tihar Jail.
That same year, in March, Ram Singh, the driver of the bus in which the girl was raped, was found hanging in Tihar.
The 2012 gangrape case shook the country. A 23-year-old paramedic was fatally assaulted and gangraped by six persons, including a juvenile. She died in a Singapore hospital on December 29.
The juvenile was convicted and sentenced to three years in a reformation home on August 31, 2013. He was released in December last year.
