The Bollywood movie ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya‘ famously showcased the use of pigeons to carry mails in the song ‘Kabootar Ja‘. Even in the pre-independence era, we were familiar with the concept of using birds as a mode of communications. The French, however, have gone far and beyond and thought of a way to put these birds to better use. A historical theme park in France has decided to train crows to pick up litter like cigarette butts off the ground.
Surprising as it may sound, it is in fact very true. The French have outsmarted most of us with this move. The Puy du Fou Park in the western Vendee region of France is training crows to make this a reality.
Nicolas de Villiers, the president of the theme park reportedly said the following about the initiative:
“The goal is not just to clear up, because the visitors are generally careful to keep things clean. It is also to show that nature itself can teach us to take care of the environment.”
The Puy du Fou Park president further added about the Rooks member of the crows family:
“Rooks are particularly intelligent and can like to communicate with humans and establish a relationship through play”.
Villers said that they will reward the crows for picking up the litter and this will motivate them. As per reports, the park will use a box to deliver a nugget of bird snack to the Rook for every piece of litter they pick up.
If this can’t teach us, humans, to keep our surroundings clean, we don’t know what will. Let’s pledge to keep our environment clean.
