Maria Garcia met her husband, Miguel Restrepo, on the streets of Medellin, Colombia. Yes, it’s a love story but is not at all like a fairy tale. Maria and her husband Miguel have been living in a sewer for the past 22 years.
But, what made them stay there for 22 years?
When Maria met Miguel, both were sailing on the same boat. Extreme drug addicts who were on the verge of giving up everything found a reason to live. Their togetherness and support helped each other to get rid of their addiction.
Their lives were almost a disaster when they met. Both were living on the streets of Medellin, Columbia, a place known for its violence and widespread narcotics trafficking.
At that time, they found shelter in a sewer and even after 22 years they still live there. They had no family or money and hence, they became family for each other.
After becoming each other’s lifeline, their life improved. But, even after that they never thought of moving out of that sewer.
An unusual home that has everything they need has kept them together since past 22 years and they are happy to live there.
Electricity, heat, light, a little kitchen, a television hooked in a corner and a few decorations for special days, their house has everything that does not make it look like a sewer at all.
They feel that their location is peaceful and is away from the busy life of the city. They also have Blackie, their dog, their companion who acts as the guardian of the homestead.
And if you ask them if they ever want to get out of that sewer and make a new home somewhere else, they will just say a big NO!
Happiness comes in all sizes. Their little home, blackie and a simple life is happiness for both Maria and Miguel Restrepo.
Maria and Miguel have learned the art of living. They are happy with what they have and that’s what makes them stand out in the crowd. May they live happily ever after in their little but full of life home.
