Congress senior leader Renuka Chowdhury has sparked a controversy saying “rape to chalte hi rehte hain” (rape is common).
She said one would not pat those in power because of delayed police action.
Her remarks seem to have given some fodder to the opposition to target Congress in the run up to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls in 2017.
She was responding in the Bulandshahr gang-rape case in which the Uttar Pradesh police have arrested three accused.
She said, “Be it the police investigation or something else, this has taken place after a long time. Now, we will have to see the future course of action because we are fed up of the situation where we hear someone or the other talking on rape everyday when we wake up. ‘Rape to chalte hi rehte hai’ (rape is common) and if they arrest someone after 10-20 days and think that we will pat their back then this won’t happen.”
The UP police on August 8 arrested three including the main accused in the brutal Bulandshahr gang-rape case. Main accused Salim Bawaria and the remaining three were on the run, while three others had been arrested earlier.
A 35-year-old woman and her 14-year-old daughter were allegedly gang-raped by a group of robbers in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district. The victims were on their way from Noida to Shahjahanpur with the other family members when their vehicle was stopped near a cycle repairing shop in Dostpur village on NH-9, which connects Noida and Bulandshahr.
