According to news reports, Congress may lose MLA Rita Bahuguna Joshi soon, with reports suggesting that she is likely to leave Congress and join Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of UP Elections.
According to news reports, sources close to Bahuguna have revealed that she is upset with the party for having projected an “outsider” as CM candidate for UP.
Congress had earlier this year revealed former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit to be there CM candidate with Raj Babbar being their state head.
Joshi, who is Congress’s former state president, had led them in UP’s last assembly elections but had fared poorly, with the party coming fourth in the elections.
Though at present both Congress and BJP seem to be clueless about the development.
While members of state BJP have said the final call on this would be taken by party’s central leadership, Congress sources say they have “no indication” of her joining BJP and would talk to her.
Joshi is Congress MLA from Lucknow’s Cantt seat and would be facing a tough electoral battle this time around.
She is likely to face SP’s Aparna Yadav, who is Mulayam Singh Yadav’s daughter-in-law, along with a strong BJP candidate who would be looking to win their old seat back.
Bahuguna’s brother and former Uttarakhand CM Vijay Bahuguna too had defected from the Congress party earlier this year, leading to President rule being imposed in the state.
UP is set to face elections early next year and at present exit polls shows no clear majority.
