Any Indian worth her/his salt has heard of the Kumbh Mela. Bollywood’s made it so that we’ve all used/heard some version of the phrase “Kumbh ke mele mein bichhad gaye the!” at one point or other. What you may (or may not) have known, is that there are in fact four Kumbh Melas — at Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik, and Ujjain.
The Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh is scheduled to start on April 22, 2016 and will last till May 21, 2016.
This year’s festivities look to deviate from the traditional spirituality and include popular Bollywood entities in an attempt to encourage younger generations to participate in this festival of spiritual cleansing.
It seems appropriate then, that their star attraction is the guy whose runaway hit was called “Aaj blue hai paani paani”. In what seems like a questionable judgement call, they’ve decided Yo Yo Honey Singh is the best way to get youngsters interested in the Kumbh.
Ujjain’s got a fair few interestingly named Babas, like Pilot Baba, Goldenpuri Baba, Barfani Baba, and Computer Baba.
Computer Baba had this to say about celebrity performances at the Ujjain Kumbh:
We have invited many celebrities and one of them is Honey Singh, who will give a religious performance at our pandal in May. We have invited him to draw youngsters to the mahakumbh and make them aware about our rich culture.
A disciple of Pilot Baba added that veteran bhajan singers Anup Jalota and Anuradha Paudwal have also confirmed their presence at the event.
Is it just me, or does the the Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh look like it’s going to be one strange event, what with Honey Singh fixating on the water being blue and such like on one end, and Anup Jalota belting out his rendition of “Aisi lagi lagan” on the other? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
