Three students belonging to the Students Federation of India (SFI) assaulted a couple of their female college-mates and their male friend on the University College campus in Thiruvananthapuram.
It was an unprovoked assault, as per a joint complaint filed by Asmitha Kabeer, Soorya Gayathri and TS Jijesh with the Cantonment police.
The trio visited the college campus to watch a theatre play.
While Jijesh was assaulted for “sitting next to girls,” Soorya and Asmitha claimed that they were also molested by the attackers.
While Soorya is a second-year undergraduate Philosophy student and Asmitha is a final-year Malayalam student, Thrissur-based Jijesh works in the Malayalam film industry.
According to Ashmitha, Jijesh had his hand casually kept over her chair. This infuriated SFI members and they questioned Jijesh’s presence on the campus and demanded to know why he was sitting with the girls.
Asmitha claimed SFI members thrashed Jijesh inside a room, and all this happened while the rest of the students and the Vice Principal chose to remain mute spectators.
Asmitha also alleged that the police responded in a lukewarm manner and at the time of filing the FIR, not included sections of molestation.
“Initially, the police sought to pass it off as something that happens all the time at the University College,” she said.
