No one knows since when but bursting crackers has been a major part of Diwali celebrations for a long time now. But what would happen if a school punishes its students for bursting firecrackers?
This is what exactly happened at a Christian minority matriculation school (Servite Matriculation School) in Trichy, Tamil Nadu. The News Minute reports that school authorities allegedly punished some Hindu students for bursting firecrackers during Diwali.
A complaint was lodged at the Palakkarai police station against the school’s headmaster and physical education teacher. In his complaint S. Sethuraman alleged that his son and a few other Hindu students were punished for having burst crackers on Diwali.
In total, seven students were singled out for public shaming.
The school gave appreciation certificates to those who stayed away from bursting crackers and asked the seven students to seek forgiveness from God by bowing their heads.
However, on its part, the school said that it was simply following a circular given by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. Sethuraman emphasized that the action has caused them mental agony.
A probe has been ordered by Tamil Nadu Education Department.
People reacted furiously over the incident on Twitter:

There have been several instances in the past where Christian schools have punished Hindu students for observing their culture and rituals at home.
In an earlier incident, the school’s physical education teacher had beaten up a schoolgirl for applying mehendi.
Likewise, as per a report, a private school in Hyderabad had in 2015 punished several girls for applying mehendi on the occasion of Dussehra.
St. Joseph school in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, suspended two boys for applying vibhuti (sacred ash) on forehead in preparation for the Sabarimalai pilgrimage.
What’s surprising is that most of these Christian schools are funded by the government. Still they do everything possible in their domain to teach children to hate the indigenous culture.
