Chhath Puja is the most important religious festival of people in Bihar and Jharkhand. It is for this special occasion that hundreds of thousands of people from the region living in other states throng to their homes.
The festival is of course best experienced at home but in this busy world of ours, finding time to visit families is in itself a herculean task – forget about celebrating festivals in a traditional way.
And with the rise of modernity, societies are drifting away from traditions.
It is exactly this fact which has been beautifully represented in a video that is fast going viral.
The video shows an urban Bihari couple who live in Mumbai and are busy with their professional lives. Though they are about to go home for Chhath, the son’s mother calls up to request that he should cancel his tickets because others from his family are not coming home for the puja.
The mother says that it would be difficult for her daughter-in-law, who is an educated, working woman, to follow the rituals at home.
When the son tells his wife about the same, she decides to follow the tradition.
And that is what is beautiful watching. The respect for the festival and the longing of the loved ones back home is what would probably make any Bihari take the first train home.
And that soulful folk song, ‘Pahle Pahil Hum Kaili’, has been sung by Sharda Sinha, the most popular folk singer from Bihar who has been honoured with the Padma Shri. One of the producers of the song-video is Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra.
Chhat Puja is a four day festival dedicated to the worship of Sun. It started on November 4 and will conclude on November 7.
