A horrifying video has surfaced on the internet showing a man throwing off a terrified dog off the rooftop.
The man in the video has been identified as Gautam S, a final year MBBS student from Madha Medical College, Kundrathur, a suburb of Chennai. His associate Ashish Paul, 23, a native of Nagercoil, shot the video.
He is seen holding a stray dog by its neck and back and mercilessly throwing it off the roof of a tall building. The man and his associate also filmed the entire episode.
The video, also shot in slow-motion, shows the helpless animal yelping and falling straight to the ground with a thump. Soon after the dog can be heard crying in severe pain.
The duo were booked for cruel treatment meted out to an animal under IPC sections 428 and 429 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (Sec 11 (1-a). Subsequently, they were arrested. However, they were granted bail by a court in Sriperumbudur. However, activists, who were a part of the rescue team said they will contest the bail.
During the inquiry, the students told police that they committed the offence ‘just for fun’.
Gautam’s parents – both doctors – are employed in the Government Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital and Ashish Paul’s father is a businessman and his mother, a doctor. The parents paid the bail amount of Rs 10,000 each.
Animal welfare activists have named the dog Bhadra, who sustained multiple fractures and is undergoing treatment at the state-run veterinary Hospital.
After the video went viral, animal welfare activists, including Antony Clement Rubin and Jennifer Jacob, lodged a complaint with police which registered an FIR and launched a search for them.
