How to Check PNR Status?
Indian Railways forms an integral part of our lives. Though we have become too dependent on airways to travel across India, the joy of traveling in a train is incomparable. The hustle and bustle of our railways is the most exciting, and the most problematic part of the travel. We, as passengers, need to be more responsible and aware of the railways’ system to travel hassle-free.
To begin with, one must know what is a PNR number and how this unique number is connected with Indian Railways computer reservation system (IR-CRS).
PNR stands for Passenger Name Record. It is a record in the database of Indian Railways computer reservation system (IR-CRS) against which journey details for a passenger are saved. So, when you book a confirmed ticket, all your details (Name, age, gender) are stored in a relational database of the centralized reservation system. These details are associated with a unique ten digit number, and this reference number is called the PNR number. PNR number is printed at the top left corner of the printed tickets.
For the unconfirmed tickets, booking status of such waitlist (W/L) ticket often changes when there is any availability of reserved seats due to cancellation. This new current reservation status is known as PNR status. It tells the current status of your ticket. You can check the PNR status via online websites such as www.indianrail.gov.in, and www.irctc.co.in.
Railway has launched SMS service for PNR inquiry to enhance customer satisfaction. There also certain mobile apps which can tell us info right away. Besides, you can inquire about your PNR status through Railway encounters.
