‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’ is a Hindi comedy movie, directed by Basu Chatterjee, which was released in 1986. It starred Anil Kapoor, Amrita Singh, Pankaj Kapoor, Om Prakash and Amjad Khan. The film was a satire on the caste system and was critically acclaimed when originally released.
It was earlier reported that Shah Rukh Khan was interested in purchasing the rights of the remake film but a deal was struck with Mantena (who also produced ‘Ghajini’) of Phantom.
The original movie was dominated by the character of Chameli, played by Amrita Singh, who was stubborn, free-spirited, and headstrong enough to get exactly what she wanted. The role is recognized as one of “the first takes on the realization of feminine desires and domination in Indian cinema”.
While no formal announcements have been made, the buzz is that Parineeti Chopra will be seen in the role of Chameli, with Diljit Dosanjh playing Charandas, the role played by Anil Kapoor.
The film will most likely be directed by Rohit Jugraj, who is a writer-director mostly associated with Punjabi cinema. Actors for the other roles have not yet been decided upon. The movie will probably not go on floor immediately as Parineeti is currently busy with her upcoming film ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’.
Earlier, Sonakshi Sinha was slated to play Chameli but the filmmakers decided to go with Parineeti. We hope they do justice to a script that is perhaps as rebellious for Indian audiences today as it was when it first released 30 years ago.
