Obesity as a disease is taken very lightly, especially in India. Its not just common people who have faced and face it, there are quite a few celebs who battled with obesity too. The seriousness of this disease is not known to many. Have a look at these 11 popular celebs who battled with obesity and what their battle was like. Maybe this will help give insight into the seriousness of the disease.


1. Adnan Sami

We all remember him for his chubbiness in ‘Lift Karade’ but we would hardly identify the Adnan Sami of today from those days. In his own words, “I was an emotional eater and ate when I was too happy or too sad. The tipping point and wake up call came when the doctors told me I had to lose weight or I would not survive the next six months.” What happened next is for all of us to see.



2. Farah Khan

Farah Khan admitted that she has always had issues because of her weight. But then she decided to get into shape because in her own words, “I am an older mum to three kids who turned nine this year. I need the energy to keep up with them. I want to have healthy years on me so I get more time with them.”



3. Amjad Khan

The legendary “Gabbar” character got popular because of his dialogues from the movie Sholay that took the status of a cult movie. Very few people, however,  are aware of the actor’s obesity problem and his battle against it. He put on a lot of weight following an accident he met with and ultimately died of a heart attack in 1992.  He was one of the few celebs who battled with obesity and lost it.



4. Ganesh Acharya

One of the best choreographers of India, Ganesh Acharya too is one of celebs who battled with obesity. He says the inspiration for his astounding 85 kg weight loss came when he touched 200 kg and said to himself, “Logon ne Ganesh Acharya ko mota hi dekha hai (people have only seen the fat Ganesh Acharya), I have to change this image.”



5. Shikha Talsania

We recently saw her in Veerey Di Wedding and most of us would not remember her as the obese best friend of Sid from Wake up Sid. She too is one of those celebs who battled with obesity and conquered it.

6. Sonam Kapoor

We all know that Sonam Kapoor weighed almost 90 kg before she made her Bollywood debut. About her own weight issues, Sonam said, “I have battled being overweight since the age of 12. By the time I was 15 years old, I had gained too much and by 19 I was almost 90 kgs. I had borderline diabetes, PCOD and every weight issue imaginable. I must admit that I was quite unhealthy when I was overweight.”




7. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

Although as an artist and as a singer, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was a much revered and respected figure who is remembered fondly even today, but very few people know of his health issues related to obesity. Some even claim that his death was a result of his obesity.



8. Sonakshi Sinha

Sonakshi is another actress who lost quite a few pounds before joining the film industry. In one of her interviews, she confessed about her weight issues and said, “I was always called out for being overweight but I knew I had to lose it all in order to make myself feel good about my own body.”



9. Jackky Bhagnani

It’s not just the Bollywood actresses who had obesity issues. Lead actors too have faced this health issue and had to battle it out before joining the industry. Jackky Bhagnani is one such actor who lost 60 kg in 2 years before joining Bollywood.



10. Tanmay Bhat

Comedian Tanmay Bhat is quite a popular celeb now. When he started out his journey as a comedian he was quite obese. He too battled it out and shed 110 Kgs in 12 months.



11. Kavi Kumar Azad

We lost a beloved character from the popular TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chasmah recently. Dr.Hathi a.k.a. Kavi Kumar Azad died of a cardiac arrest and the reason is rumored to be his obesity and weight issues.
