Chhattisgarh Congress on October 18 suspended rebel MLA Rajendra Kumar Rai for “anti-party activities” and making  derogatory remarks against Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi.

Rai, who is considered a strong supporter of Chhattisgarh Janata Congress Party chief Ajit Jogi, though was expecting the move and remained defiant.

He once again attacked Rahul in a statement and said he could not ‘call a donkey a horse’.

“I was told the action has been taken against me for making comments against Rahul Gandhi (in the past). I can’t call a donkey a horse. If the party feels my observation is wrong then either it is blind or (is) acting like a blind person…I am not at all sad with the move because I am a true and vocal tribal representative. I am free now.”

Earlier in the day, the decision to suspend Rai was taken by Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee (CPCC) at a meeting of its Coordination Committee in Raipur.

After the meeting, Chhattisgarh’s AICC General Secretary B K Hariprasad had addressed the media and told them about Rai’s suspension.

“With the unanimous decision of the members of Coordination Committee, Rai has been suspended from the party.”

The panel had then gone on to recommend that Rai, who is an MLA from Gunderdehi, should also be dismissed from Congress altogether.

Hariprasad though asserted the media that Congress will fight 2018 Assembly elections under the leadership of Congress state chief Bhupesh Baghel and legislature party leader TS Singhdeo.

Rai though welcomed the move, alleged it also exposed Congress’s “anti-tribal” face.

Late last week, Chhattisgarh Congress had issued a show cause notice to Rai for “anti-party” activities, when he had publicly made statements against the party.

Rai  was brought into politics by former Congress leader Ajit Jogi, who had helped him get a ticket from Gunderdehi seat for 2013’s Assembly election.
