In a daring attempt to rob a Sao Paulo bank of its monies, Brazilian robbers spent almost four months to dig a 2000 feet long tunnel.
Although they had toiled really hard to steal a bounty, their seemingly interesting and full-proof plan was busted as the police arrested the entire gang on Monday. There were as many as 16 members in the robbery team. The notorious gang had planned to enter into the safe room at a Banco do Brasil branch.
According to the police authorities, the 16 member robber gang were planning to loot a whopping one billion reais, which is about $317 million. The amount, when converted into Indian Rupees is over Rs 20,72 crores.

The investigating police chief Fabio Pinheiro Lopes said that if the robbers had succeeded in their plan, this would have been one of the biggest thefts in the history of the world:

It would have been the world’s biggest heist.
The police said that the work on the tunnel began more than four months ago from a house located several blocks from the bank. Their investigation pointed out that it is not just another “tunnel” as it vouches of some sophisticated supports such as lights and fans. Construction of the tunnel itself cost them about $1.27 million.
However, this is not the first time such an incident has taken place in Brazil. Twelve years ago, a different gang tunnelled into a bank vault in Fortaleza and made away with $70 million in Brazilian reals.
