Gayle Newland, 25, created an online male persona years ago when she was 13 and realized that she was attracted to girls. His name was Kye Fortune – half-Filipino and half-Latino – and his pictures were stolen from a good-looking American man. She began using the alter-ego in chat-rooms and then on social media networks like Facebook, Bebo and MySpace.
In 2011, the unnamed victim received a friend request from Kye Fortune; she had no idea that the “guy” was actually another student from her college, University of Chester.
The two would chat online and talk on the phone (the victim described Kye’s voice as being high-pitched). Then came the news that Kye had met with an accident; not only that, the doctor had discovered a tumor in his brain. As he recovered, Kye told the victim how much she had helped him get better and how it was a sign that they should get married and have children.
Kye arranged to meet the victim at a hotel but asked that she wear a blindfold as he was ashamed of his scars. This is how they had sex five times in 2013 – with the victim keeping her eyes covered at all times.
Even though the relationship involved more than just sex – they watched movies, sunbathed outside and went out in Kye’s car – the victim kept her blindfold on at all times. Meanwhile the victim had also become good friends with Gayle Newland, who said that she knew Kye as well. However, during one sexual encounter, the victim reached back and touched something that did not feel right.
According to the victim, “I was sat on the bed, he was standing up. Something in my mind said ‘pull it (the blindfold) off, pull it off’. I just pulled it off. Gayle was just standing there… I just couldn’t believe it, I couldn’t believe it. Straight away she held her hand down over her face and said ‘it’s not what you think’.”
After Newland’s arrest, police found an “ultra cyberskin penis” in her flat, which the victim recognized. According to Newland, however, the two women met at a gay nightclub in 2011. The victim then admitted to Newland that she was gay but could hardly even admit it to herself. Newland is denying the five counts of sexual assault against her. However, there was another woman with whom Newland tried the same modus operandi; unfortunately, the woman recognized her dog and called Kye’s phone asking for Gayle. When Gayle said, “Speaking,” the affair ended.
Meanwhile the victim said that she would have preferred to have been raped by a male. “I just think of all the stuff I let her do to me, like foreplay, and it makes me feel sick.” She had agreed to follow ‘rules’ which included not touching Kye’s ‘penis’ and wearing a blindfold because she thought she was with a man.
After the truth was out in the open, the victim sent Gayle angry messages, such as: “How could you do this to me for two years? You have been a fake, you have manipulated me. Fake life, fake love.” “Are you for real? You should be locked up for what you have done. You really are a piece of work. I have just one question, why me?” “You have no other explanation other than you are pure evil.”
