Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit along with other powerful world leaders. He took to headlines for a veiled dig at Pakistan addressing the issue of terrorism and radicalism. However, something else happened which will interest Indiansas well.
During the lunch hour at the summit, two Bollywood songs, ‘Mera Joota Hai Japani’ and ‘Awaara Hoon’, were played to everyone’s delight. The lunch ceremony took place at the banquet hall in the Palace of Independence which was also the venue of the SCO summit.
A diplomat present at the venue said,
Both the songs were played during the lunch and they received wide applause.
Both songs are classics from Raj Kapoor’s ‘Awaara’ (1951) and ‘Shree 420’ (1955). ‘Awaara’ was also nominated for the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Movie buffs might recall ‘Mera Joota Hai Japani’ being played in Marvel’s superhit film ‘Deadpool’ during the entry of Ryan Reynolds.
It is notable that recently ‘Dangal’ became the first ever Bollywood movie to earn Rs 1,000 crore in China. According to a report in The Hindu, the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, said he really liked the movie and hopes to see more such movies released in China in the future. Bollywood is surely getting a strong hold in China.
