8 Must Watch Bollywood Films Which Raised Awareness On Serious Health Diseases

Bollywood films which have always been known for drama, action and romance, touched a different genre when it showed diseases. However, in the recent times, one sees a major drift in scripts where films have focused on real-life issues like health awareness or life-threatening diseases.

Some Bollywood films have scored majorly well at the box office as the actors/actresses performed their role exceptionally well. Dealing with sensitive or even taboo subjects like cancer or AIDS, these films raised the bar.

Here’s a list of Bollywood films which taught us the effect of some serious diseases which were unheard of before.


1. Hickhi (2018) – Tourette Syndrome



Rani Mukerji who made her comeback after marriage and motherhood with ‘Hichki’, plays a teacher who suffers from Tourette Syndrome, a non-treatable disorder.In this disease, the brains motor and vocal electrons have no sync. The sufferer has constant blinking and throat sounds, both uncontrollable.



2. PAA (2009) – Progeria 



This 2009 film saw veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan like never before. He suffers from a rare genetic disorder, Progeria, which accelerates the ageing process. Though it’s not an uncommon disease it was shown for the first time in Bollywood. The film shows the effects of Progeria which eventually leads to death by teenage years.



3. Taare Zameen Par (2007) – Dyslexia



The Aamir Khan directorial saw child artist Darsheel Safary suffering from Dyslexia — a learning disability which makes correct reading difficult for the sufferer. One of the few Bollywood films which gained popularity for its child artists, it was a path-breaking film that urged parents to seek help for their Dyslexic children.



4. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) – Terminal Cancer



One of the few Bollywood films which saw the unusual romance between a older woman (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and a young lad (Ranbir Kapoor), it also starred Anushka Sharma who suffers from terminal cancer (stage 4). Anushka‘s acting as a cancer patient took everyone by surprise.



5. Zero (releasing Dec 2018) – Dwarfism




This film hasn’t yet released but already created a buzz as Shah Rukh Khan is seen as a dwarf – a never-seen-before role. The actor is playing a vertically-challenged guy, whose growth is stalled beyond a level. Most commonly, dwarfism is caused by metabolic and hormonal disorders which stall growth hormones.



5. Piku (2015) – Chronic constipation


This Bollywood films deals with chronic constipation and the effects of a disturbed bowel movement! Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan in lead roles, this film was appreciated by the audiences for its relate-able characters.


6. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017) – Erectile Dysfunction



No one could play a better role of a man suffering from Erectile Dysfunction as Ayushmaan Khurrana. This is the first kind of subject any Bollywood films have ever shown before. The common condition among men makes them difficult to experience erection during sexual intercourse.



7. My Name Is Khan (2010) – Asperger’s Syndrome



Shah Rukh Khan suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of Autism, in this film. The surname ‘Khan’ became a trend ever since the film gt released in 2009. Kajol and Shah Rukh together in one film is the key to super hits, but in this film, Shah Rukh‘s performance as a socially awkward Indian in America, was truly par excellence.



8. Ghajini (2008) – Anterograde Amnesia



One of the few Bollywood films to deal with Anterograde Amnesia, Aamir Khan showed what it was all about. This is a condition wherein the sufferer is unable to register new memories, and therefore, suffers from Amnesia. To portray his character best, Aamir takes help of Polaroid photographs and permanent tattoos.
