The ‘always-outrage-mode’ of the Indians is no secret. Add that with the communicative platform of social media and you always have some news about controversies. With brittle egos and offend-ready nature, no wonder there were so many incidents that lead to outrageous debates.
Some of these controversies were an attempt to draw light towards the prevailing issues but some were totally absurd. These incidents made some noise in 2017 for quite a considerable time.
The freshest controversy of 2017 that pops up in the mind is the ‘Padmavati controversy.’ There was a lot of hue and cry from an organization of Rajput community (Shri Rajput Karni Sena) even before the release of the movie. They urged a nationwide ban citing the reason that this movie “distorts historical facts.” The Sena even burned down a bus in protest. Finally, the movie was released by changing the name to ‘Padmavat.’ There are times when human stupidity can leave you in awe, this controversy was a burning example.
2. Priyanka Chopra’s dress
The Internet gives you power but some people choose to abuse it! Incidents like this certainly prove that point. The international-famed Priyanka Chopra found herself in middle of a controversy over the attire she selected while meeting PM Narendra Modi. Many found her knee-length dress to be ‘disrespectful’ and ‘against India culture.’
3. Fatima Sana Shaikh swimwear
With her strong and edgy performance in ‘Dangal,’ this actress won hearts across the nation. This free-spirited lady was targeted by self-proclaimed-upholders-of-religion when she shared a picture in a swimsuit. She was trolled for sharing the picture during Ramadan.
4. Sonu Nigam and Azan
Sonu Nigam took to Twitter to complain about the ‘sound of Azan’ and how it disturbs his sleep. He further called out that this practice is ‘forced religiousness’. While some supported this singer, the others bashed him for such an insensitive comment.
5. Abhay Deol and fairness products
On his Facebook post, this actor slammed other actors for endorsing fairness products. He posted a series of pictures to call out against racism. Some of the actors who were openly targeted were Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, John Abraham, and Ileana D’Cruz. Now, this is a controversy we wholeheartedly support.
Adhering to her outspoken nature, Kangana Ranaut called out film-maker Karan Johar for Nepotism on his own show. During the chat show ‘Koffee With Karan,’ Kangana referred to him as the ‘flagbearer of nepotism.’ Another layer was added to this already juicy fiasco when actors Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan took at dig at Kangana’s comment and made fun of her at the IIFA Awards event by chanting “Nepotism rocks.”
7. Lipstick Under My Burkha
This internationally acclaimed film faced hurdles at home ground for being ‘lady oriented.’ The film which talks about women sexuality was initially banned by Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani. It finally was released after a long struggle.
These were not all but few among the many controversies that made 2017 entertaining for us.
