Most of the Bollywood stars are often shown as larger than life and ideal characters on-screen. However, what they are in real life is far from that we so love and idolize. But it is not true for all. Some of them do believe in giving back to the society and working towards the greater good rather than just doing good cinema and make a lot of money.
Here is a list of some big-hearted, generous and top donors in Bollywood:
1. Vivek Oberoi
Vivek Oberoi is the WHO spokesperson for anti-tobacco campaign. He is also the brand ambassador for Food For Life Vrindavan (FFLV). He was very active in providing relief to tsunami victims In Tamil Nadu and even received a letter of appreciation from Hollywood star Naomi Watts for this generous and thoughtful act. Reportedly, he has donated over Rs 20 crore to date to support numerous charities dealing with civic and social issues.
2. Rahul Bose
He runs a charitable organization in Andaman and Nicobar islands. He adopted six children from the islands and made them join a school in Andhra Pradesh. In order to be able to do so, he raised funds of Rs.2.4 million. Deeply committed to his charitable work, Bose is associated with several organizations which include Teach for India, Akshara Centre, Breakthrough, Citizens for Justice and Peace and the Spastics Society of India.
3. Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan is an active feminist and her initiatives to improve the lives of less fortunate and underprivileged women of the country are quite appreciable. She is the brand ambassador of the national sanitation initiative and ‘Clean India’ campaign. In 2016, she donated donated Rs 5 lakh that she received at an award function to an NGO to build toilets in rural parts of India.
4. Amitabh Bachchan
Bollywood’s Big B has a big heart too and this has been proven on several occasions. From polio awareness to women empowerment and clean-up initiatives, he actively participates in all the good causes. In a bid to spread traffic awareness in the city of Mumbai, the Shahenshah of Bollywood donated Rs 11 lakh towards the traffic police fund. In February, 2017, he also donated Rs 51 lakh as part of funds to be used to build an auditorium in Delhi’s Kirori Mal College from where he graduated.

From teaching self-defense to women and spreading awareness about healthy living, the famous Khiladi of Bollywood has kept himself busy with a lot of good causes. In 2017, he donated Rs 1.08 crore to the families of twelve slain jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Alongside this, he also launched an app named ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ which enables donors to contribute towards and extend financial support to the families of Central Armed Police Force/ Central Para Military Force.

Despite her being busy in national as well as international assignments, PeeCee has always managed to devote time for good causes and being actively involved in initiatives which would make the world a better place to live. After her father’s demise in 2013, she donated Rs 50 lakh to help build a cancer ward in a suburban hospital in his memory. She started the Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education and provides support for other notable charities such as UNICEF, Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation, and 10×10.
8. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Following the footsteps of her father-in-law Aishwarya also participates in a lot of charitable work and social causes. Post winning the coveted Miss World title, she announced her decision to donate her beautiful eyes after her death. Last year, on the occasion of her 44th birthday, she donated free meals for 1000 children for a year under the mid-day meal programme. Similarly, in 2013, on her 40th birthday, the Bollywood beauty celebrated the occasion by donating cash for cancer patients . The Padma Shri winner has also been named Goodwill Ambassador for UNAIDS.
9. Salman Khan
The phrase ‘heart of gold’ is often used to describe Salman and rightly so. We all know about his ‘Being Human’ venture and there are many other initiatives he has taken over the years which prove and show his charitable nature. In 2016, he donated Rs. 2.5 crore for the drought affected areas of Maharashtra. Reportedly, his NGO (Being Human foundation) has provided funds for the heart-surgery of over 600 children.
10. Shahrukh Khan
The Badshah of Bollywood is loved by his fans for his acting and his charity work. You’ll be surprised to know that he is the only Indian to have received the UNESCO award for charity. However, the King Khan feels that charity should not be made openly. Last year, he donated Rs. 1 crore for the victims of Chennai flood. Reportedly, he also donated the prize winning money of his IPL team KKR which was a whopping Rs 15 crore. He donated this amount for the treatment of cancer patients in Mumbai and Kolkata.
After reading this, we’ll all love our favorite stars a little more. In fact, rather than mimicking and copying their on-screen acts and styles, we should be inspired by their such deeds and follow in their footsteps in working towards creating a better world.
