Most Bollywood celebs had humble beginnings and used their first salaries modestly. Though they can afford everything that money can buy, there was a time when every penny mattered. When they were not so popular, they had to rely to all of their savings. Each star didn’t reach the pinnacle of success without knowing what money meant and therefore, spent their first salary in the following ways:
1. Priyanka Chopra
The versatile and multi-talented Indian actress who made her mark in Hollywood as well, was named by ‘Time’ as one of the 100 most influential persons in the world. This gorgeous Bollywood Diva won the coveted Miss World title 17 years back, and now she is a multi-millionaire. When she got her first pay cheque of Rs.5000, she gave to her loving mother Madhu Chopra, who still treasures the amount.
2. Sonam Kapoor
This stylish actress has graced the covers of some of the top fashion magazines and attended the famed Cannes Film Festivals. She started her Bollywood career not as an artist, but as an Assistant Director (AD) to Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the movie Black. She earned her first salary working as an AD for a mere Rs.3000 per month, and used that money to commute.
3. Arjun Kapoor
Before starring in the movie Ishqzaade (and loosing oodles of weight!), Arjun Kapoor was working as an assistant director with director Nikhil Advani for ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ at the age of 18. The ‘2 States’ actor began earning his first salary of Rs. 35000 but instead of spending on himself as any teenager would do, gave all the money to his parents who opened a bank account in his name.
4. Hrithik Roshan
The ‘Greek god’ of India and Bollywood’s green-eyed heartthrob started his career with the super hit movie ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’. But not many know that it wasn’t his first film! Hrithik started acting at a young age of 6, as a child artist in the movie named ‘Aasha’. He received Rs.100 as his first salary, with which he bought himself toy cars! Recently, he has gifted a blue Mercedes Maybach S500 to his sons and also bought a same for himself!
5. Randeep Hooda
The versatile actor who delivered powerful performances in movies like ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai’, ‘Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster’, ‘Jannat 2’, ‘Highway’ ,’Kick’ etc, had not the start you would imagine. The actor who currently charges up to Rs.2 crore per movie, worked two jobs in the summers when he was in Australia before his glitzy career. He worked at a Chinese restaurant where he earned $8 per hour and $1.3 for every delivery he made. He also earned $40 by washing cars with which he used to buy a can of beer.
6. Kalki Koechlin
She impressed us in ‘That Girl in Yellow Boots’, ‘Margarita, with a Straw’ and ‘Dev D’. Kalki, who has done a variety of roles, worked as a waitress in an Italian cafe in London. Her first salary of 40 pounds was used to pay off her rent! This actress hardly saved much from her first salary as London is one of the most expensive cities to live in!
7. Irrfan Khan
The National School of Drama graduate Irrfan used to give tuitions to students and charged Rs.25 as a fee. He purchased a new bicycle from his first salary to make the commute easier! Irrfan Khan hails from Jaipur, Rajasthan. Starting from TV serials, Khan has now made it large in Bollywood as well as Hollywood.
8. Aamir Khan
Aamir’s first cheque was Rs.1000, which he earned while working as an assistant director and as a devoted son, he gave it to his mother.
9. Richa Chadda
This beautiful actress earned alot of respect in her short but successful 8 years in Bollywood. She got positive reviews for movies like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur-1’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur-2’, ‘Fukrey’ and the internationally acclaimed flick ‘Masaan’. Much prior to that, at the age of 12, she performed for Doordarshan and got paid Rs. 200 and a saree. The young girl gave it all to her father.
10. Shah Rukh Khan
Can you guess the first salary of King Khan of Bollywood? The man who owns land on the moon now?! The self-made actor charges in crores now and producers are ready with a blind cheque to sign him. But, back in the days, SRK worked as an usher at a Pankaj Udaas concert for which he got Rs.50. And he used to buy a ticket to visit the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders in the word.
