A terrace that was covered to build a make-shift canteen by Shah Rukh Khan has been demolished by BMC.
Red Chillies Entertainment, owned by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan, had covered a terrace at their office building to make a canteen for the 316 staff that they have. The couple had purchased the entire fourth floor of a DLH building in Malad to do post-production work. They had converted the 2,000 sq. ft terrace to make a make-shift canteen which was illegal and violated fire-safety norms.
Red Chilies Entertainment issued a statement:
Red chillies Vfx is a tenant and not the owner of the property mentioned. The building has an open area outside with seating which employees use for eating food that they get from home. It is not an operational canteen. However, due to a misunderstanding, the part which the BMC demolished are the energy saving solar panels which provided clean energy to the entire Vfx division. Red Chillies Vfx is taking this up with the concerned authorities at the BMC.
Chanda Jadhav, the assistant commissioner of Police and the ward, commented:
The terrace needs to be remain open to sky, but they have changed it into usable area. They have covered the terrace which is violation of FSI rule and fire safety norms.
The BMC mentioned that in July they had received a complaint against the alteration and had visited the premises to find that the canteen was made illegally, violating several fire-safety norms. They had also issued a notice to the company for such an alteration. Khan had approached the court to get a stay order but failed, following which the demolition took place.
