Russian President Vladimir Putin was to arrive in the city for a meeting with his Belarussian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.

He is not ruling out the possibility of the blast being an act of terror. But Russia’s General Prosecutor has officially declared it an act of terrorism.

Media reports also claim that a third bomb has been found in another metro.

Within moments of the blast, social media was flooded with pictures and videos of the wreckage of the coaches and wounded people.

Authorities believe that the explosive device, which had sharpnels, was home-made. It is suspected that the blast which blew a hole in the coach was equivalent to 200 grams of TNT.

The location of the attack inside the metro station.

Ambulances were quickly pressed into service at the Sennaya Ploshchad metro station, the nearest location of the blast.

President Putin offered condolences to the families of victims.

While no terror group has claimed involvement yet, the possibility of Islamic State hand in the blast cannot be overlooked.

Russia has been at the forefront of the war against the barbaric terror group. On March 24, they had claimed responsibility of an attack on the Putin’s elite Russia’s National Guard base.

At the same time, a section of the Chechen militants continue to threaten Russia with terrorist attacks. A series of major attacks since 2002 have all been carried out by the Islamist terrorists of Chechnya.
