In a rare gesture, Union Cabinet Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi complemented her estranged sister-in-law and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for curbing corruption.
Addressing a discussion in Pilibhit on corruption in schools, when an official said that he did not have the authority to act against corrupt bureaucrats, Maneka narrated an incident where one of the Sonia Gandhi’s relatives used to take advantage of her name.
She said: “Once Sonia Gandhi’s relative opened up a shop. That relative used to take advantage of her name. Sonia put out advertisements in newspapers asking people not to go to that person for any help. I’m asking you to do a similar thing. You, too, advertise.”
She also urged them to put up notices outside their offices and assured that a vigilance enquiry would be carried out on all babus.
Pilibhit District Magistrate Masoom Ali Sarwar said, “The minister said that those seeking recognition for schools should directly approach the BSA or a senior authority like the district magistrate. The administration will put up notices in this regard.”
Maneka was in her Lok Sabha constituency and met with district officials, bank officials and farmers regarding schemes run by the Centre. She also met with village pradhans and locals under ‘Gramoday se Bharat Uday Abhiyan.’ She also met with members of Vigilance committees.
