You might have heard about all sorts of fairs so far such as cattle fair, food fair, camel fair, elephant fair, textile fair etc. but have you ever heard of a fair where buyers bid for women. Shocking yet true! A fair where people openly bid for women is organized in the name of religion.
Very well known as ‘Red Light Area’, Khagra fair is organized in Khagra that falls in Kishanganj area of Bihar. As reported by Amar Ujala, the women participating in this fair start preparing for it many days in advance. They do this so that they can woo the men arriving here. At the time when this fair is organized in Khagra, this place becomes the prime center of prostitution for the entire country.
The people who visit this fair for the first time get to see a number of unusual things they wouldn’t have seen or heard of before. The most shocking part of this fair is that even the police knows about it but still acts like it knows nothing about it.
It is a well known that the women who get into prostitution once rarely get a chance to come out of it ever in their lifetime. The women who step into the world have their destiny completely changed. Their hope for living the life of a normal girl keep on getting faint with every passing day.
In India, where prostitution is illegal, it is appalling to see that such fairs are still held. It is high time that police and administration wakes up to the reality and takes some concrete steps to put an end to this fair as well as takes on prostitution rampantly being practiced in many other parts of the country.
