Bhumika Sharma, a female bodybuilder from Dehradun, has won the title of Miss World at the World Bodybuilding Championship held recently in Venice. The championship was organized by the World Amateur Body Building Association (WABBA) on June 17 and 18, 2017.
Gaining maximum points in body posing, individual posing and fall category, the 21 year-old ace bodybuilder grabbed the first position in the championship, leaving behind 50 bodybuilders from all over the world.
Bhumika’s mother, Hansa Manral Sharma, is a Dronacharya awardee and the head coach of the women’s weightlifting team of India. Bodybuilding wasn’t Bhumika’s passion until a few years ago when she met an inspiring bodybuilding coach by chance. Prior to that, Bhumika was passionate about shooting and wanted to advance her career in that.
The young bodybuilder isn’t done with her feats yet as she is now warming up for the Miss Universe Championship to be held in UK in December.
Typically, bodybuilding has largely been a male-dominated sport, but Bhumika Sharma’s recent achievement is sufficient to prove that women are capable of doing everything that the world thinks they cannot. However, achieving what she has hasn’t been easy for her. Her desire to create a space for herself in the arena faced ridicule off-stage.
Talking to the Times of India about her journey, Sharma says,
When I first started training I had a lot of fat on my body. There were times when people made fun of me. But once I developed clean cut muscles, less and less people ridiculed me. Bodybuilding is a male-dominated field and at times men would get insecure when they would see my workouts. There is a lot of negativity towards women bodybuilders. At times I was de-motivated. I also suffered a neck injury during the first year of my training. But it was my mother’s constant support that kept me on track
Bhumika Sharma is not the only Indian girl who has established her name in the world in the field of bodybuilding. Prior to Sharma, Sarita Devi won the bronze medal in the World Bodybuilding Championship 2015.
