While some sections in the society are busy debating the controversy surrounding the jailbreak and subsequent killing of eight SIMI operatives by the Madhya Pradesh Police, there is also one reality that no one can hide from — head constable Ramashankar Yadav sacrificed his life fighting against terrorists.

Ramashankar Yadav, 58, who was due to retire in early 2019 and had undergone a bypass surgery a few years ago, had requested senior officers to give less demanding work and not post him on night duty, but got no respite.

He was working in the night shift for the past one year. He has said that he was not fit to keep check on terrorists.

“He was unable to celebrate Diwali because of his duty and his family was waiting for him to return, but destiny had something else stored for him,” according to a family friend.

Eight operatives of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) slit Yadav’s throat with a knife fashioned out of a steel plate inside the isolated B block in the Bhopal Central Jail late on October 30 night.

Both his sons (Shambhunath and Prabhunath) are employed in Army and his only daughter Sonia was about to get married in five weeks. Sonia is in a state of shock after hearing the news of her father’s death. She was excited about her marriage but now there is just a pall of gloom.

According to Prabhunath, his father should be given the status of a martyr as he gave his life serving the department. He was also angry over the responsibilities given to his ageing father.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced Rs. 10 lakh compensation to slain security guard besides Rs. 5 lakh for his daughter’s marriage and renamed the colony in his name.

The MP CM, who attended the funeral of Ramashankar Yadav, said some politicians are highlighting the encounter for vote bank politics while they can’t speak a word on the martyrdom of the slain constable. BJP’s Shrikant Sharma had questioned the opposition leaders, especially Congress, for playing vote bank politics over the Bhopal encounter.

Soon after the incident, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had asked whether prisoners escaped or they were made to escape as part of a plan. Congress has also made a veiled attack on Amit Shah by saying that only BJP chief can comment on Bhopal encounter as he has experience in Gujarat (referring to Shah’s alleged involvement in Sohrabuddin encounter case) and his party is in power in Madhya Pradesh.
