India runs on tea! For most, the morning doesn’t start without a sip in the steaming cup of ‘Chai.’ Not to forget that tea-selling is a popular business in India, as tea-stall could be found at every nook and corner of the country.
Taking cues from the idea, an American woman started selling tea and build a $7 million brand.
It all started when she began searching for “Indian” tea at Colorado cafes, and getting mesmerized with it during her India visit. Without any luck, she decided to take matters into her own hands and started preparing tea herself.
Soon her special blend “Bhakti Chai” hit the market. She started selling the tea concentrate on back of the car. What started as a temporary business soon made its place at local coffee shops and cafes in Colorado.
During an interview, she said that there is no reason for her to find love for Indian tea but she still did. In her own words:
“I’m a white girl born of hippie parents in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and then raised in Michigan, right? I shouldn’t really have this pulse for India, but I do. I love the chaos and vibrancy. Every time I come I’m introduced to something new. It’s just real.”
Her business was evolving slowly when it received a sudden boost from two investments. She left her full-time job to concentrate on popularizing the product. Owing to her business, she also won the Entrepreneur Magazine’s “Entrepreneur of the Year” award in 2014.
