2017 started on a bad note for a number of women in Bengaluru.
According to a report in Bangalore Mirror, drunk and unruly men molested and abused women revellers in the presence of 1500 policemen. The incident took place at Bengaluru’s MG Road and Brigade Road where thousands of people have assembled to welcome the new year.
In what could be best described as ‘night of shame’ for Bengaluru, the women became easy target for hooligans in the guise of revellers. When women were leaving the pubs they were met with hooligans who tried to molest and accost them.
The situation became unruly on Brigade Road and the police had to resort to a lathi charge to get things under control.
Despite women facing such a bad situation, no cases of molestation have been registered with the Bengaluru police as of now. The police admitted to helping out women in distress who reached out to them, but denied getting any calls complaining of molestation.
The incident undoubtedly raises the issue of security and safety of women in the country and specifically in the Congress-led state.
Eye-witnessed said distressed young women were forced to literally take off their shoes and run for help. Molestation and rape cases have become commonplace across India especially during New Year’s eve celebrations.
Reports suggest city traffic police booked around 400 cases of drunk driving, with complaints reporting that traffic cops were lenient with motorists, many of whom were under the influence of alcohol.
