School Students In Bengal Allegedly Beaten By Police For Protesting Closure Of School On Saraswati Puja

Updated on 31 March, 2017 at 4:21 pm By

The sorry state of affairs for Hindus in West Bengal is rising to pathetic levels under the draconian rule of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

School students were peacefully protesting against the closure of a school with others ahead of Saraswati Puja. An alleged lathi-charge by the police on protesters left many students badly injured.

Saraswati Puja is a very significant event for all Bengali Hindus. On this day, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped by the students and teachers alike. Schools remain open for the puja ceremony and children come dressed in their best attires.

In Mamata’s Bengal, however, Saraswati Puja is now under threat because of the state government’s appeasement policies which help the radical Islamists more than the Muslims in genuine need of help.

The incident happened in Uluberia where students of the Tehatta High School were prevented from holding Saraswati Puja festival.

The school was locked and the students wanted to know why. Protesting school students staged a sit-in on the National Highway 6 that connects Uluberia to Howrah at Khalisani.

Photos and videos doing the rounds of social media show injured students. They blame the police for using batons leading to injuries.

But since Mamata Banerjee’s iron grip on the mainstream media in Bengal remains very strong, this incident is not being highlighted by the media as it should be.

The Tehatta High School was recently under attack by radical Islamists in Bengal who wanted to hold Milad ul-Nabi celebrations on its premises.

The school administration had refused which led to the attack on the school. Following the disturbance caused by the Islamists, the school had to shut down for a brief period. A police complaint was filed but no action was taken against the perpetrators.

What is even more shocking is that hardly has any mainstream media highlighted the incident. A report in India Today says that the protesting students have written to the police seeking help to conduct Saraswati Puja at the school, which they claim is being conducted for the past 65 years.

The Indian Express reports that tensions escalated on January 27, when students started preparations for Sarawati Puja in the campus to be held on February 1. School property was vandalised by outsiders which forced the local police to impose section 144. Allegedly unable to handle the pressure from fundamentalists, teacher-in-charge Utpal Mallik resigned from his post.

A few days after the Milad ul-Nabi incident, a group of radical Islamists – most of whom are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh – openly threatened Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Again, there was no media coverage. And instead of taking action against radical Islamists in her state, Mamata Banerjee continues to silence the voices critical of terrorism and radicalism, including those who slam Pakistan.

A series of riots in Bengal all of which were against Hindus have gone unreported. Only the Dhulagarh riots in which Hindu homes were burned caught attention of national media because of relentless social media campaign with pictures and videos of the incident doing the rounds. Even in this case, the media in Bengal maintained a total silence.
