It’s indeed welcoming to see that young filmmakers in Bollywood have started exploring ideas which once used to be kept under the wraps for a host of reasons. Not only directors but actors are also responsible for this change because it’s not possible to sell an idea to the audience without them. Badhaai Ho is a product of such nascent change only. Let’s find out whether or not the much-awaited film succeeds in eliciting a great deal of laughter from the audience.
What’s Badhaai Ho All About?
Nakul Kaushik (Ayushmann Khurrana), a regular Delhi-based young man, is pretty happy with his middle-class life. He has a caring family, a loving girlfriend Renee (Sanya Malhotra) and a growing career. What else a man wants? But his peaceful life goes for a toss when he comes to know that his 51-year-old mother (Neena Gupta) is pregnant. More than anything else, he is worried about the embarrassment it would cause him in society. Nakul is unable to come to terms with the fact that his parents can also have a sex life. Earlier, Renee’s rich mother had no issue with her only daughter planning her future with a middle-class boy like Nakul, but now she terms his family a circus she does not want to buy a ticket to. So what will happen now? Will Nakul’s parents abort the child? Will Nakul and Renee be able to withstand the resistance coming from the latter’s mother? To know more, watch the film.
What Qualifies Or Disqualifies It To Be Your Pick This Weekend?
Badhaai Ho is a simple film that does not try to preach anything. It is filled with movements that deliver full entertainment. We all can imagine how funny things can get when a young man is told that his parents are about to welcome a new child in the family. There is an abundance of dialogues that keep tickling your funny bones every now and then. Having said that, Badhaai Ho revolves around a one-line idea that, at times, does seem a little stretched. Screenplay also does not help much. But the way director Amit Sharma has mixed it up well with humour, sarcasm and emotions are quite praiseworthy.
Talking about performances, Badhaai Ho is an excellently performed film with each and every actor delivering their best. Ayushmann Khurrana as Nakul is amazing. The actor is known to deal with characters which are a little uncommon to see. Here, he gets to play the same type of character and nails it with his perfect timing and priceless expressions. Now that we are talking about expressions, let’s not forget Gajraj Rao who is seen in the role of Khurrana’s father. Rao is the master of expressions. When he is there in any scene, you just don’t want to shift your attention from him. In most of the scenes, he steals the thunder even from Ayushmann Khurrana. Neena Gupta is endearing in the movie. It’s so good to see her doing such amazing work at this stage of her career. Surekha Sikri as Dadi is bang on. In a nutshell, all the characters in the film are so real and relatable that it feels we have seen them in our real life as well.
Come on, we hardly get to see well-made entertainers that we can enjoy with our entire family. Badhaai Ho is a film that gives you that opportunity. So, don’t miss it! Though the movie has some flaws here and there, it leaves a beautiful smile on your face at the end of it. I’m going with 3 stars.
