For many of us, Bollywood was the only language of cinema, but since the inception of the ‘Baahubali’ franchise, we are all mesmerized by this extraordinaire S.S Rajamouli.
Rajamouli has set an unprecedented benchmark for creativity, imagination, and the power of cinema. The moment we left the movie hall after watching this epic drama, we were completely astounded, and questioned, “How did we make such a grand film in India”?.
It also made us realize that Bollywood is far behind the Telugu industry in terms of quality film-making. And this point was rightly put by Baahubali‘s sound designer, PM Satheesh, who has worked in both the industries.
PM Satheesh, who has previously worked in Bollywood films like ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’, ‘Kaminey’ and ‘Ishqiya’, spoke to Indianexpress about the indiscipline nature of Bollywood,
What we lack here (Bollywood) is discipline. Why is that stuff like this (Baahubali) happening in Telugu cinema and is being pulled off wonderfully there because the money for the film of this sort goes into the production. It’s not eaten up by a few big stars. If you have a 600 crore-film in Mumbai, at max Rs 100 crore will go into the production, if you are lucky. Otherwise, everything is siphoned out to a few stars and people. In Baahubali, every penny has gone into the production that’s why it shows.
Somewhere, the overrated star power in Bollywood has diminished the magic of cinema. On the other hand, the actors in ‘Baahubali’ franchise were not that popular, but their spectacular performances completely gripped us.
Satheesh believes that money is the driving force in Bollywood, not quality. He says,
If you look at the sound budget of Baahubali, people in Bollywood will faint because they will not spend that kind of money for the quality. That’s a huge difference. We ask anything to the production of Baahubali, if that’s justified, if we can logically and rationally explain that to the producer or the director, it’s done. Nobody asks another question. But here(Bollywood), we have to struggle so much to convince them for the basics. So, you need to have an intention and a discipline to put that money into the production.Advertisement
