While the liberals and secular champions in the society and in the media continue to find fault with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s actions against illegal slaughterhouses, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan made a statement that would shock them.
The nine-time MLA and former minister in the Akhilesh Yadav government has now called for a ban on cow slaughter across India. Not just that, the influential Muslim leader wants all Muslims to stop eating beef.
Khan was speaking to CNN News 18 when he made the remarks.
“Cow slaughter should be banned across the country. Why is it so that it is legal in states like Kerala and West Bengal but not in other states?” he asked.
Kerala is ruled by a communist government while West Bengal has Mamata Banerjee in power.
Khan cited the example of the Jains who he praised for not consuming meat of any kind.
He put the onus of convincing the Muslim community on the Ulema.
“Ulema should appeal to the people that they should stop eating meat,” he added.
The response comes on a day when meat sellers from the state went on strike against the ban on illegal slaughterhouses.

But Khan also questioned why the ban was against illegal abattoirs only.
“So it means that it is ok if animals are butchered in legal slaughterhouses and not ok when the meet the same fate in an illegal place. This legal, illegal thing should stop. All slaughterhouses should be shut. No animal should be slaughtered,” he said.
