Asumal Sirumalani aka Asaram Bapu, is today a convicted rapist who will spend the rest of his life behind bars and his two accomplices will see the light of the day only after 20 years for the same offence. Not only is Asaram Bapu a self-styled godman and now a picture of pity, he is not going to see his immense wealth for good. The tonga-puller from Rajasthan who launched himself as a spiritual guru in the 1960s, is known to have established more than 400 ashrams in the country and abroad.
During a raid in 2014, the city commissioner of police, Rakesh Asthana disclosed that Asaram’s bonds and other financial investments valued over Rs 10,000 crore – and this amount excludes the value of his lands!
He procured vast acres of land across the country, the value of which is still uncertain, but can run into crore. The wealth of Asaram’s ashrams in the form of bank accounts and other investments including shares, debentures and government bonds (excluding land) is an amount which only gets escalated every time an investigation is launched.
During raids in his Ahmadabad ashram, police found out that in Gujarat, he owned land in and around 45 places and 33 places across four other states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
The police raids also reveal thousands of documents detailing his financial transactions which were brought to the city in more than 40 big bags.
The godman had kept the undisclosed income of Rs 2,300 crore hidden from the income tax department.
Upon raids by the Income Tax (IT) department, it found that there were several illegal investments linked to him and his thousands of followers. The investments were made in real estate, mutual funds, shares, Kisan Vikas Patras and fixed deposits.
In Gujarat, it was said that Asaram held lands in 10 districts, which had value estimation in crores.
He was also famous for offering cash loans too with the help of his followers to individuals or other entities. In fact, that money was loaned in cash, with post-dated cheques and land-purchase deeds as security.
It’s suspected that with such cash loans, there was a bigger picture behind it. It was probably a scheme to conceal the amount of donations received by his various ashrams across India and the world.
According to a 2013 document obtained by Income Tax department, Asaram earned a shocking interest amount of around Rs 419 crore in a year and out of that, kept Rs 163 crore as cash in hand!
Asaram had devoted high-profile political followers as well, which included former MP Chief Minister Uma Bharti, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
He also had a good rapport with India’s current Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After all the above assessments, you should not be surprised to know that Asaram is worth almost whooping Rs 10,000 crore!
Asaram (77) and his son Narayan Sai are currently behind bars in connection with various rape cases.
Meanwhile, another charge sheet was filed against Asaram in a court in Gandhinagar earlier this month by two Surat-based women who accused him of unnatural sex, rape and illegal confinement.
