This Thursday, a woman in Kolkata had registered a police complaint regarding plastic eggs being sold in shops of the city. Taking action on her complaint, the KMC ordered investigation into sale of “artificial eggs”.
During the investigation, Kolkata Police has arrested a shopkeeper named Md. Shamim Ansari this Friday. The shopkeeper was arrested from Park Circus Market for selling “plastic eggs” to Anita Kumar, the complainant.
The lady registered a complaint with Kolkata Police when she suspected that eggs she was cooking were made of plastic. They had a plastic-like texture when cracked open on a pan for cooking.
Acting on the complaint filed by her, a team of KMC officials led by Mayor-in-Council (Health), Atin Ghosh, raided several markets in the city. Similar samples of “plastic eggs” being sold in shops were also collected by them.
According to Mr.Ghosh, Md. Shamim Ansari procured the “artificial eggs” worth Rs. 1.15 lakh from a wholesale market in the Muchipara area of the city.
The officer revealed that he and his team seized a crate of eggs from the wholesaler who had sold them to Ansari. Commenting on the issue, Mr. Ghosh said
We will also collect at least three more crates of similar samples from other shops in the market and send them to the concerned department for analysis. According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, food adulteration is a punishable offence.
He added that if these eggs are found to be life-threatening, offenders may face severe punishments of life imprisonment and a huge penalty.
