This Tweet From A Pakistani General To Sharif Points To The Core Difference Between India And Pakistan

Published on 30 April, 2017 at 4:23 pm By

Except for those who deliberately ignore it, the fact that Pakistan is one of the world’s most tenuous democracies is well established.

For most part of its existence since separating from India in 1947, Pakistan has been ruled by its all-bossy and all-powerful military.

Even Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is a victim of a coup.

In control of the country for approximately 33 years with intermittent periods of democratic rule, it is obvious for Pakistan’s military bosses to develop an air of attitude which makes them see themselves as above the PM.

This is exactly what was evident in this tweet by Major General Asif Ghafoor, Director General of Interservices Public Relations (ISPR):

The tweet was in response to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s act of sacking Syed Tariq Fatemi, special assistant to the prime minister on foreign affairs.

The sacking was announced via a directive issued by Sharif’s office. Fatemi has been accused for his alleged role in ‘Dawn leaks’ – a 2016 story published by Dawn in which the paper claimed that the government had told the army to act against all terrorists.

Former Pakistan information minister Pervaiz Rasheed youtube

Pakistan’s military establishment saw the report as an insult. Pervaiz Rasheed, the country’s information minister at the time of the leaks, had to resign.

What is important here is to note that the army can easily reject any action by the Pakistani PM.

And this, dear friends, is what highlights the core difference between our neighbor and us.

While India has never seen anything close to a coup, the country’s military always upholds the Constitution and thereby the directives of the Government.

In spite of being one of the most powerful forces on Earth, the Indian armed forces are hailed for their professionalism, integrity and respect for democratic values – three crucial things absent in the Pakistani military establishment.

This is exactly what Twitterati pointed at:

It is indeed true that Pakistan merely poses as a democratic country before its Western donors. In reality, the military exerts a veritable influence over crucial areas such as defence and foreign policy of the country. No one can become a ‘friend’ of Pakistan without the military’s approval. And everyone who knows international politics really well, knows that.
