After waiting for nearly a decade, Indian Army is finally set to get world-class helmets for military operations.
According to a report by NDTV, every jawan of the Indian Army will now be equipped with a world-class helmet which is an essential part of a kit and can save a solider’s life.
The report states that a Kanpur-based company MKU Industries has been contracted by the Indian Army and asked to manufacture a total of 1.58 lakh military helmets.
The deal is said to be worth Rs. 170 – 180 crore and the production of these new helmets is the first large-scale order for helmets by the Indian Army in more than twenty years.
These new helmets will be delivered to the Indian Army within the next three years.
One must note that MKU Industries is a world leader when it comes to manufacturing body armour (bulletproof jackets and helmets) for the armed forces and exports to many countries around the world.
The new helmets would make a huge difference in the safety of the soldier as they are designed to bear the impact of 9 mm bullet, even if they are fired from a short range.
These helmets also meet the global standard for protection that is set among leading armed forces across the world.
About a decade back the Indian Army had equipped the elite paramilitary special forces with Israeli OR-201 helmets which are made of Glass Reinforced Plastic for safety, but when it came to regular soldiers in the infantry they are made to use domestically-made helmets which are not only uncomfortable to wear during combat situations, but are also very heavy as they weighed around 2.5 kg each (patka helmets).
