On February 24, India woke up to a tragic and unbearably shocking news of the untimely demise of yesteryear actress Sridevi. The veteran icon who ruled Indian cinema for over four decades, had suffered a massive cardiac arrest in Dubai and left a pall of gloom in everyone’s heart. The 54-year-old actress was in Dubai with her family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Her sudden death shook the Bollywood fraternity and her fans all over the world.
She is survived by her husband, Boney Kapoor, and two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi.
Although she was a happily married woman with two wonderful young daughters, her relationship with her stepson Arjun Kapoor always caught the wrong thread. Arjun’s sour and bitter relationship with Sridevi and her daughters was no big secret as he had openly confessed that they mean nothing to him.
Oddly enough, the Half Girlfriend star was never shy of admitting his strained relations with them. He always maintained that she means nothing more to him than being his father Boney Kapoor’s wife. In a statement to Yahoo!, his exact words were: “We don’t really meet and spend time together so it doesn’t really exist.”
This statement makes it obvious that Arjun never desired a relationship with either of them, but there’s a strong reason behind it. For that, you’ll have to understand the flashback to get a sense of where Arjun is coming from.
Arjun is the son of Mona Kapoor, the first wife of producer Boney Kapoor. She had to give up her 13 years marriage after Sridevi came in between their lovely paradise. Sridevi married Boney in the ’90s after taking a break from movies.
All this happened like a bolt of lightning. Sridevi had befriended producer Mona Kapoor when she was married to Mithun Chakraborty. She even tied rakhi to Boney (which Mithun insisted she did to prove her love for him!).
This relationship soon turned into something different and wrecked three lives. Sridevi became pregnant with Boney’s child and dated him despite both being married.
The news of Sridevi’s pregnancy spread like a wildfire and she was accused of being a ‘home-breaker’. In 1996, Sridevi and Boney had a simple temple wedding and Boney left his first wife, Mona, and kids Arjun and Anshula, for the actress.
A shattered Mona, who was left to fend for herself and her two children, in one of her interviews said:
He (Boney) was 10 years older to me. I was 19 when I married him. So I literally grew up with him. Ours was a 13-year-old marriage. So it came as a shock when I realised that my husband was in love with somebody else. There was nothing left in the relationship to give it a chance because Sridevi was already with a child.
Sridevi was so insecure about her marriage that she BANNED Boney from meeting his children from his former marriage!
Arjun and Anshula were taken away from their father who was asked to cut off all the ties with them. This is a major reason that Arjun, who was very attached to his mother, has no relationship with his step-mother and half-sisters.
In an emotional flashback photo, Arjun remembered his familia:
All the grudges against his father’s other family left him in deep distress. In an unfortunate turn of events, he actually lost his mother who succumbed to multi-organ failure in 2012. Ever since then, he’s relied on his relationship with sister Anshula for support and comfort.
Both Mona and Sridevi have a weird coincidence which has grabbed their deaths. Mona was diagnosed with Cancer in 2012 and died just two months before the release of her son’s debut movie, Ishaqzaade. Now, Sridevi’s first daughter, Jhanvi Kapoor, is all set to debut with her first film Dhadak, but Sridevi will not be there to watch her daughter’s first movie.
On the work front, Arjun is gearing up for Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar starring Parineeti Chopra, in which he plays a cop.
Meanwhile, Sridevi’s mortal remains will be flown to Mumbai today and her funeral is expected to take place in the afternoon. We don’t know how to cope with the loss of such a legend.
