In India, surnames have always carried immense significance, even in the ancient era of kings and queens. The tradition has been followed by the modern generation as well, when most people add a surname as a suffix to their first name. Majority of surnames in India were used by more than one family and are carried forward with their names by their future generations. But among all these, there is one unique surname that was for the very first time used by Amitabh Bachchan’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and is now used by Amitabh and his family members.
Since the surname Bachchan has no history before the time it was used by late Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a famous poet, people have always been curious about how it originated and what surname the family’s previous generations had been using.
In the finale episode of popular television show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ hosted by Amitabh Bachchan, Big B himself made public the mystery behind his father’s original surname and why he started used Bachchan instead.
During the show, the 75-year old actor revealed that his father’s actual name was Harivansh Rai Srivastava. But since he was strictly against the caste system, he decided to drop his surname Srivastava.
Big B said that his father was fondly called Bachchan at home, which in colloquial Hindi means childlike. So he adopted Bachchan as a suffix to his first name.
The surname might have later been adopted by some more people later, but it was used by Harivansh Rai Bachchan for the first time. And today, it is one of the most iconic and unique surnames in the world as it has reached this position because of Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s own popularity and Amitabh Bachchan’s fame.
