Road safety is a major concern in India.  Since a large part of these accidents are a result of traffic rules not being followed by people and the lack of awareness, the government has now launched a road safety campaign in association with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. As per estimates, more than 10 lakh people have been killed in road accidents in the past decade and over 50 lakh have been left severely injured or disabled during the same period of time.

While the figures are shocking, the government claims to be doing a lot of efforts to reduce the number of accidents and avoid deaths by providing rapid assistance.

The campaign with the theme “Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha” was kicked off by Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways along with Akshay Kumar on August 14. The campaign aims to reduce the number of road accidents further, by spreading awareness about road safety and laws among the public at large.
