In its recently announced list of ‘World’s Highest-Paid Actors’ in 2018, Forbes India included “game changer” Akshay Kumar. The Gold actor is the seventh highest-paid actor in the world as he earned $40.5 million (Rs 282.32 crore) during the year. The magazine also termed him as “one of Bollywood’s leading men” who has worked on socially-relevant films such as Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Padman. Akshay is closely followed by his contemporary Salman Khan in the ninth place.
There is no doubt that Akshay is the biggest celebrity brand and is far ahead of industry’s three Khans (Salman, Shah Rukh and Aamir). The actor has created his own niche in the industry and is now a popular face in almost all genres including comedy, drama, and romance.
Talking about his films in 2018, Akshay delivered three films that went on to become box office hits.
Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 is on a record-breaking spree in 2018. Released on November 29, the film literally dominated the box office. It was also loved by the audience. Zooming past the Rs 700-crore mark worldwide, S Shankar’s magnum opus emerged as the highest-grossing film of 2018. The movie marks Akshay’s debut in Kollywood.
Akshay’s Gold, which was released on August 15, 2018, also entered the Rs 100 crore club. It was the actor’s ninth Rs. 100 crore film. Gold had also got the third biggest opening day of 2018. In the movie, Akshay plays the role of a hockey team manager Tapan Das. He assembles and motivates team India to win its first gold medal as a free nation at 1948 London Olympics.
Padman is based on the real story of Arunachalam Muruganantham who de-stigmatized menstruation. In the movie, Akshay was seen wearing a sanitary pad and talking about menstrual hygiene. The film, produced by Twinkle Khanna, dealt with a tabooed subject and portrayed it beautiful
Now take a look at the Box Office reports of three Khans (SRK, Salman and Aamir):
Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero
Zero, directed by Aanand L Rai, is the story of a vertically challenged man (Shah Rukh Khan), falling in love with a scientist suffering from cerebral palsy (Anushka Sharma) and an actress battling alcoholism after a heartbreak (Katrina Kaif). The film has been slammed by the critics as well as the audience. According to an estimate, Zero’s total collection (as on December 28) is around Rs 91.32 crore. SRK’s Jab Harry Met Sejal, released in 2017, was also a flop.
Salman Khan’s Race 3
Salman Khan starrer Race 3 (Rs 166.40 crore) was a dud at the box office. There was a lot of excitement as the movie included names like Anil Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Bobby Deol, and Daisy Shah. However, it became a topic of jokes from the trailer itself, and eventually, Race 3 flopped. Unsurprisingly, Race 3 was also the most trolled movie of the year.
Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan
With actors such as Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan, the audience expected the movie to be a blockbuster, but it came out to be the worst performer of 2018. The lack of sensibility in the story and comparison with the Pirates of the Caribbean hampered the film’s success. The movie was made on a budget of approximately Rs 300 crore but earned merely Rs 150 crore at box office window. So, in the end, it was a costly mistake.
It was in 2007 that Akshay came into the big league of Bollywood stars and there has been no looking back since then. So far the actor has given nine Rs 100 crore movies including Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Jolly LLB 2, Rustom, Gold, Airlift, and Housefull 3. In 2019 too we are expecting to see some smashing hits from this actor.
