It was a moment of great embarrassment for the wife of Abdul Hamid, the 1965 Indo – Pak war hero who was bestowed the country’s highest bravery honour, the Param Vir Chakra (PVC), posthumously. A certain Rasoolan Bibi, assumed to be Hamid’s wife, was felicitated by Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav at a function on Wednesday, oddly enough, with him nor the organisers knowing who martyr Hamid’s wife was.

According to the 95 year old Rasoolan Bibi, wife of the war hero, she learn’t about the felicitation only when the local news papers came out with their reports.

She said:

I was neither invited nor attended the function.

The media reports stated that a local unit of Samajwadi Party had organized a program at Nathhupur village in Azamgarh district, about 300 km from the state capital. It was at this function that Akhilesh Yadav was to unveil a statue of Ram Samujh Yadav and also felicitate the kin of other martyrs from the district.

As the organizers called out the name of Rasoolan Bibi, a 70-year-old woman got onto the stage and took the reward. Later the organisers found out that she was some other Rasoolan Bibi.

According to Jamil, Bibi’s grandson:

She never goes anywhere alone…she is always accompanied by one or more members of the family…on Wednesday she was at home.

Havildar Abdul Hamid of 4 Grenadiers was commander of RCL (Recoilless) gun detachment. During the 1965 Indo-Pak war, he had destroyed several enemy tanks in Khemkaran sector. For his bravery and courage he was awarded Param Vir Chakra (PVC) six days after his martyrdom on the battlefield.

Realizing the grave mistake, a senior district SP leader said:

It was a mistake…we will meet Rasoolan Bibi and tender an apology…we will also felicitate her.

BJP has slammed Samajwadi Party for humiliating Rasoolan Bibi. BJP leaders now plan to host another function to specially felicitate Rasoolan Bibi on September 10, the day Hamid in 1965 when he died on the battlefield.
