He lost the elections to a BJP tsunami of such force that it practically tore his party apart.

Many attributed the loss of the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister to his alliance with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, whose performance in elections is a lesson of sorts in failure. Others attributed it to infighting within his party.

Honestly, Akhilesh had his sympathizers even among those who placed their faith in BJP who did not equate him with his party and its founder Mulayam Singh Yadav. But this time the Samajwadi Party chief has landed himself in a situation where he is not expected to find a single supporter.

In his overenthusiasm to take a dig at Narendra Modi, Akhilesh delivered a foot-in-the-mouth statement. While commenting on the Indian Army martyrs, this is what Akhilesh said:

I have been saying that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and south India have had a lot of martyred soldiers, but has any soldier of Gujarat been martyred?” Akhilesh can be heard saying.

He goes on to say that there should be no politics over martyrs. Unfortunately, he was the one played politics over the martyrs with that statement.

A terribly angry Twitterati was in no mood to forgive Akhilesh for this uncharacteristic remark:

#AkhileshInsultsMartyrs was one of the top trends on Twitter. But the Congress party, it appears, did not condemn Akhilesh’s remark:
