The joint press conference held by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on January 29 drew a lot of media attention, with many points with regards to the upcoming UP elections being discussed by the duo.
While questions on the majority of the topics were cleared without much difficulty, there was one question that drew opposite reactions from Rahul and Akhilesh.
This question was with regards to political rival Mayawati, with whom Congress seemed open to coalition while SP couldn’t even bring them self to consider it.
While there is nothing new or surprising about Akhilesh’s reaction about Mayawati, it was what he said that seems to have gotten Twitterati’s furious.
In his address, Akhilesh poked fun of Mayawati’s weight and even compared her to an elephant.
“How could we have given her (Mayawati) space (in the alliance)? She takes up so much space. Even her party symbol is an elephant”.
While the press conference continued from there on, Twitter started flooding with tweets of outrage, with many expressing shock and outrage about Akhilesh’s comments.
Akhilesh Yadav body shamed Mayawati but no outrage. Secular hai bhai apne ladke.

Akhilesh Yadav just insulted and body shamed Mayawati today. Do you have the courage to condemn it? https://t.co/snipRj4gbt

But even as Twitterati expressed shock over his remark, in the political outfield, no one even batted an eyelid.
There has been absolutely no reaction from Rahul, who was sitting beside him and saying, “his respect” for Mayawati is still intact, or their political rivals BJP who only focused on SP-Congress’s “unbalanced” alliance.
