Tanaji Malusare was the military leader in the army of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He stood by Shivaji’s side from his early youth and was considered to be one of his most celebrated companions. Known as the “man of iron”, Tanaji’s tales of bravery are talked about as an example of undaunted military dedication.

Tanaji is best known as the conqueror of Sinhagbad (the Lion’s Fort). The Treaty of Purandar (1665) made Shivaji surrender at least 23 forts to the Mughals which also included the fort of Sinhagad. However, Shivaji’s mother, Jijabai (also, mother of the kingdom) was extremely displeased with the loss. She directed her son to win the fort back which was an impossible task according to him. He, however, believed that only Tanaji could do the unfathomable.

Bold and valiant, Tanaji took the mammoth task at first command and conquered Sinhagbad. With an army of fewer men than his enemies, Tanaji attacked the fort devising promising and smart tactics. Sadly, he sustained fatal injuries from Uday Bhan, the Mughal commander. When Shivaji learned about his best companion’s demise, he grieved by saying “We have gained the fort, but lost a lion”.

Ajay Devgn will be seen in the role of Tanaji. In the past, Ajay has played the role of Bhagat Singh, a hero from pre-independence era. All eyes are on this period movie which will teach us a thing or two about the brave men from the past.
