Freedom fighter Bhagat Singh had killed British officer John Saunders on December 17, 1928, and the pistol he used has now been found.
As per media reports, the .32mm Colt automatic pistol was on display at the Reoti firing range of the Border Security Force in Indore. However, there was no mention that it belonged to Singh.
Singh had shot down Saunders, held responsible for the death Lala Lajpat Rai, in broad daylight.
Custodian of the Central School of Weapons and Tactics (CWST) museum, Vijendra Singh, told a newspaper, “We were surprised when we removed the black paint on the pistol and matched the serial number (168896) with our records last year. It was Bhagat Singh’s pistol.”
After avenging the death of Lala Lajpat Rai, Shaheed Bhagat Singh partnered with Batukeshwar Dutt and bombed the Central Legislative Assembly while shouting the slogans for freedom and the revolution to achieve it for the country, before surrendering to the police.
Despite his bravery and sacrifice that ultimately inspired generations, Shaheed Bhagat Singh was only declared a martyr by the central government in its records in 2012.
Bhagat Singh was hanged on March 23, 1931.
